WORDS TO WORK BY

You've got to repot yourself every once in a while.

Sound like a spring-time thought?

You're right -- it could work that way. What better time than spring, after all, to think about making some changes that will help you grow.

And individual growth does seem to have been on David Pottruck's mind when he introduced these words to work by. As president and chief operating officer of the Charles Schwab Corporation, Pottruck said, "You've got to be committed to lifelong learning, lifelong challenge, and lifelong renewal. You've got to repot yourself every once in a while."

So . . . if you're feeling a bit pot-bound in your current work situation, maybe you should look for some ways to break free and give yourself more room to grow. Does that mean changing jobs? Could be. But there's a difference between repotting and uprooting, and it may be that you can find some ways to learn and do new things without changing employers. Lots of us have found that the key is not in changing jobs, but in changing ourselves. The "pot" that really needs changing may be the one on your shoulders.
