SISYPHUS & US

You remember Sisyphus -- he's the guy in Greek mythology whose eternal punishment is to push a rock up a steep hill, only to have it roll to the bottom everytime he gets it almost to the top. Sisyphus is the quintessential working stiff, the all-time personification of work-as-cruel-hoax, Western Civilization's symbol of labor as meaningless punishment.

After three thousand-plus years of his working hard but getting nowhere, we decided Sisyphus needed a fresh challenge. So, we've made him Hard@Work's official role model.

Sisyphus has great potential. You couldn't ask for a more dedicated worker. But his Standard Operating Procedure is full of myths that don't get the job done. For example, what's all this about working entirely alone? And doing the same routine over and over regardless of results -- that's really gotta go. Trouble is, he's been at it so long, making a change for the better is gonna be really hard without a lot of help.

And that's why we have such a soft spot for Sisyphus: because our goal is to build a community where people really will learn from each other about making work more meaningful, satisfying and successful.

Of course, we're also quite fond of our friend Rocky. We believe that jobs should be an experience of unlimited growth, not infinite frustration. That's why we keep wondering... what if, instead of pushing against the rock all the time, work meant you could BE the rock. What if you could flat-out rock at work, like Jerry Lee Lewis wailing at a pianner, like Chuck Berry playing-guitar-just-like-a-ringing-a-bell?

Having that much fun at work might seem revolutionary -- that is, perfect for people in the middle of an Information Revolution, where one goal definitely worth fighting for is helping people communicate better than ever before about how to do good work.

And that's what we're aiming to do here in Sisyphus Unwound. In The GoZone and DEM-Witted Management, we're hoping to help Hard@Workers rise above the myths of working: to stop pushing so hard, and start rocking.
