STARTING EMPLOYEES OFF RIGHT

On your new employee's first day at work, the most important
thing you can do is strengthen his enthusiasm for the job. Here are
six ways to make sure his first day is a great beginning:

	1. WELCOME THE NEW EMPLOYEE. Spend some time with the
person when she arrives. Introduce her to the other employees and
show her where to find the coffee pot, the snack bar, and the rest
room. Review information about benefits, paydays, and policies.

	2. DESCRIBE THE JOB AGAIN. Make sure the new employee has
a written job description listing all of his duties. Read through it
with him so he understands what you expect. Let him ask questions
and clarify his understanding of the job.

	3. ESTABLISH WORK PRIORITIES. Spend more time discussing
important duties than insignificant ones. The new employee will be
listening carefully for indications of your priorities, so be sure you're
sending the right signals.

	4. ASSIGN IMPORTANT WORK. This is your way of saying "I
need you. Your contribution is important." At the same time, it
enables the employee to experience the satisfaction of doing
meaningful work and the rewards of accepting new responsibilities
right away.

	5. GIVE FEEDBACK ON THE QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE Correct
performance that is not up to your standards and reward successes
generously and consistently. The first day is not too soon for an
employee to receive praise and recognition when she does something
well or constructive criticism when she needs to improve.

	6. BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL. A new employee will be noticing
how you conduct yourself. If you arrive on time, work a full day,
treat clients with respect, and use your time wisely, your new
worker will do the same.

The actions you take that help the new employee feel needed
and welcomed--and get him working as soon as possible--will go a
long way toward making this person an enthusiastic and productive
member of your team. Plan out that first day, and make the most of
it.
